Potsdam, New York offers a variety of recreational activities and facilities for both its residents and visitors. The Village of Potsdam maintains multiple parks, where activities like boating, fishing, and swimming are popular. The notable locations include Sandstoner Park, offering public access to the Racquette River, and Ives Park with a gazebo and riverside walking trails.

Potsdam Recreation is a hub for activities in the village, including Pine Street Arena, which hosts winter skating activities from Mid-October to Mid-June. The arena is home to Potsdam Junior Hockey, the Potsdam Figure Skating Club, Potsdam Central High School Boys and Girls Varsity Hockey, and adult men’s hockey clubs including the Potsdam Pioneers, Potsdam Potbellies, and Potsdam Part-Timers.

Public skating times and other sessions are posted weekly and updated daily on Village of Potsdam Recreation’s Facebook Page, as well as on the Village’s website. Pine Street Arena is located at 43 Pine Street in Potsdam. With hockey skate rentals from size 6 youth/toddler to size 13 adult, the recreation department has more than 100 pairs of skates, including a few half sizes ranging from 10.5 youth to 11.5 adult. Skate sharpening is also available, but it is strongly encouraged to call ahead of arrival, or be able to pick them back up later in the day depending on staffing and daily schedule.

The arena features an upstairs warm-room, that can be reserved for birthday parties, which can be combined with a private ice rental for your group, with access to music and skate rentals that are available in our birthday packages.

Snowshoes are also available for rent in the winter months, with 5 available sizes, which are determined by the wearer’s weight.

In the summers months, Sandstoner Park is a destination which includes a pavilion with 12 metal picnic tables (two of which are ADA accessible), a small playground, and a beach with a capacity for 250 swimmers. Sandstoner Beach is typically open from the beginning of June through the end of August. The beach is also ADA accessible, featuring a textured mat that leads from the start of the beach down to the waterfront. Two beach wheelchairs are available as well, for free use by visitors and community members while enjoying time at the park.

Kayaks and inflatable paddle board rentals are available through the Village of Potsdam Recreation Department. Equipment includes two tandem kayaks, three youth kayaks, and close to 20 individual kayaks. Paddles and life jackets are included with rental, which can be made daily during beach hours by checking with a lifeguard. Larger groups an special requests are asked to call the arena office ahead of time.

From June 29th to August 7th, 2026, the arena and Sandstoner Park is home to Potsdam’s Annual Summer Recreation Program. Weekly activities and games are provided at the arena, under the supervision of Playground Leaders and Recreation Staff. Sandstoner Park also features six outdoor Pickleball courts, which is home to the North Country Pickleball Club, whose fundraising efforts and tournaments have contributed to monetary donations to charitable groups and organizations.

These efforts reflect Potsdam’s commitment to providing diverse and enjoyable recreational opportunities for all ages and interests. Additionally, the village’s recreational infrastructure is reviewed and updated to meet the needs and interests of the community.
